100 hour Pharmacy

Putting Patients First

Proposal for KMP 100 hour Pharmacy in Keyworth

At Keyworth Medical Practice we focus on those things that really matter to patients.

The NHS is currently going through a process of reform. At Keyworth Medical Practice we feel it is essential to be forward thinking so that we can embrace the government’s vision for the future of the NHS. Only with this ethos can we aspire to give our patients the service they deserve. With this in mind we have set out a plan for the future. We shall continue to put our patients at the heart of everything, and provide an all encompassing and comprehensive medical service.

This is where “Keyworth Healthcare Services” comes into action. It is not just about pharmacy provision but as the name suggests it is a service for our patients. It will be available not only to Keyworth residents but also those in neighbouring villages. We intend to provide services beyond those which are already offered in the area and make care between General Practice and pharmacy one which is integrated and seamless.

The dispensing of prescriptions is only a small part of what will be available. Our practice population includes those who are elderly, infirm and housebound. Many relatives find it difficult to access palliative medicines for their loved ones. By having a pharmacy that is open until late (11pm) seven days of the week, makes things much easier. Improving accessibility and quality of life is invaluable for these patients and also those with young families. We intend to provide all those services that are currently being offered by pharmacies in the area including delivery of prescription items, purchase of over the counter medicines and other health products.

We will also be focusing on patients with chronic illnesses such as asthma and heart failure who often require “out of hours emergency care”. Protocols will be put in place which can be implemented if these patients suddenly become ill. Pharmacists will be able to liaise with practice doctors with an overall aim to reduce the need for hospital admission and A&E attendance. This will ultimately help to save money for the NHS which is already under huge financial restraints from the Department of Health and could possibly prevent the loss of patient services. Having control of the pharmacy allows us to have the potential to develop further services in the future.

Pivotal to our success will be a close working relationship. Our GPs, nurses, pharmacists and allied health professionals will all have the same focus. We will have a completely integrated service. For example the practice have intimated that there is the potential, with written and signed consent, for the pharmacist to be able to access all or part of patients notes through the clinical computer system. This would facilitate safer joined up care which is particularly important for patients with complex needs and will allow tailored health promotion and screening. Our aim is to take away the barriers which have traditionally worked against the patient’s best interest.

This venture is going to be entirely privately funded by the GP partners. It is not going to be subsidised by any third party or government organisation. We are very passionate about what we want to achieve and ours is a genuine commitment to our patients.

The government wants to empower and liberate GPs to innovate, with freedom to focus on improving healthcare. We feel our vision epitomises this, and in order for us to achieve our objective we need your support.
